Extra Security

Most people are unaware but with the right tools traffic sent over the Internet can been snooped on and read by other people (a bit like somebody opening and reading your postal mail before you can get to it). To prevent this from happening you can encrypt your traffic using something called SSL. Once you are using SSL the data you send and receive is scrambled so that even if anyone did look at it they would not be able to make sense of it.

For those of you that shop online you may have noticed that when entering a payment the start the address will be https:// instead of the usual http://. The S on the end signifies that the data is encrypted. If you use the links above to access your CPanel and webmail because they also use https you will be accessing them through encrypted channels. This is especially important when you use CPanel or webmail because you will have to send your password and you don't want anyone to see that!

Encrypting your Email Connection

Once your website has been migrated to NeonHorizons new servers you can configure your email application to connect using SSL. To do this you need to go into your email software's account settings and make sure the SMTP and POP3 (or IMAP) servers are set to mail.neonhorizon.co.uk. You then need to select the SLL option in the server connection settings. Once you have done this your email client will connect to the mailserver securely and nobody will be able to see your password. (Please remember though, this does not mean your email is encrypted! You should never send passwords or confidential data over email.)

Encrypting your FTP Connection

Once your website has been migrated to NeonHorizons new servers you can also upload and download files to it securely using SSL encrypted FTP. To do this you need to connect using FTPES (FTP over explicit SSL) to ftp.neonhorizon.co.uk instead of the old fashioned insecure FTP. Configuring FTPES is very much dependant on the FTP software you use so giving instructions on here is quite complicated. For Windows machines NeonHorizon strongly recommends using the FileZilla FTP client. FileZilla is a free, simple to install yet powerful FTP client which fully supports FTPES.
